About Brent

Brent, a borough in northwest London, is one of the most ethnically diverse boroughs in the UK, with a population representing a wide range of ethnicities, languages, religions, and nationalities.

Ethnicity
  • Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) groups make up a significant majority of the population (64% as per GLA figures). 

  • The largest ethnic group in Brent is Asian, accounting for 36.0% of the population, followed by White (35.0%) and Black (21.1%). 

  • There's also a significant presence of individuals from mixed racial backgrounds.  

Nationality & Language
  • Brent has a large European population, with around one in five residents holding EU nationality. 

  • Residents from 215 different countries have been identified in Brent through census data.

  • 149+ different languages are spoken in Brent. 

  • While 63% of residents speak English as their main language, in a fifth of households, English is not the primary language. 

  • Notable languages spoken, apart from English, include Gujarati, Polish, and Arabic.  

Religion
  • Brent exhibits religious diversity as well, with the largest religious group being Christian (39%), followed by Muslim (21%) and Hindu (16%). 

  • Brent is home to landmarks like the Neasden Temple, one of the largest Hindu temples outside India, and JFS, Europe's largest Jewish school. 

Socioeconomic
  • Diversity in Brent extends to its socioeconomic landscape as well. 

  • While some residents are affluent, parts of the borough face high levels of deprivation. 

  • Brent is ranked among the more deprived local authorities in England.  

Brent Council's approach to diversity

Brent Council acknowledges and celebrates the borough's diversity and is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and has equal access to opportunities through their Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy 2024-2028, aimed at tackling inequalities and supporting individuals and families in reaching their full potential.

Driving progress and equality together

Achievements from the first year of the EDI strategy include launching a community wellbeing hub, accrediting dementia friendly venues, providing library services to vulnerable residents, engaging schools in a race equality program, and distributing digital devices to address digital exclusion. In addition to the EDI Strategy, Brent Council has an Anti-Racism Action Plan to combat racial injustice and become an anti-racist organization.
